UTCN Appeal Information - When to pay

Your Tyne Tunnel is a grassroots campaign group providing an independent voice for customers using any of the tunnels under the Tyne.

This information is based on either published sources available in the public domain or gathered from other users, our opinion is our own.

Please note - as TT2 will not release a copy of their 'Business Rules' we have no way of checking whether the rules are fair, applicable and transparent. This list may get modified from time to time as we gain new intelligence.

We think you should pay your UTCN without delay in the following circumstances:

  • You deliberately took a pay later ticket without any intention of payment

  • You simply forgot to pay by the deadline

We think you should consider paying your UTCN in the following circumstances:

  • You are worried that this will escalate and you are not prepared to fight your case in court

  • You can't be bothered to fight through the process even though you are sure you are right

In this case, pay and if you still think you are right - write to your MP and ask them to raise it on your behalf, explain you think the appeals process is unfair, request a refund and tell us about your story so we are aware of the volumes.

When we don't think you should pay your UTCN:

In these scenarios we recommend in your appeal that you offer to pay the outstanding toll amount. If this is your first time you have received a UTCN it would be sensible to work through the appeal process, and set up a prepaid / exempt account to prevent it happening again.

  • You have a pre-paid account in good credit

  • You are a motorcycle or other exempt user

  • You tried to pay but the system would not let you for some reason and the contact centre was either closed or did not answer your call within a reasonable timescale, or you emailed them / tweeted them/ Facebook DM etc them and they didn't respond before issuing the UTCN

  • You were mis-led by the wording of the deadline printed on the ticket.

  • When you were misled or confused or unaware of the temporary signage during the toll plaza removal.
